For this reason, I provide guide prices based on photographs and dimensions before preparing a formal estimate.

Why does upholstery cost what it does?

Quality upholstery is skilled, hands-on work. Many projects involve hours of stripping, repairs, preparation, sewing and careful finishing before the final fabric is applied.

Unlike mass-produced furniture, each upholstery project is completed individually and tailored to the piece in front of me. Every chair, footstool or cushion is different, requiring time, attention to detail and a considered approach.

The aim is not simply to change the appearance of a piece, but to ensure it remains comfortable, functional and attractive for years to come.

As a guide:

• Dining chair seats from £60 each
• Window seat cushions from £180
• Footstools from £250
• Armchairs from £650

Recovering vs Reupholstery

Recovering involves replacing the outer fabric while retaining the existing fillings and structure where appropriate.

Reupholstery is a more extensive process that may involve stripping furniture back to the frame, replacing worn materials and rebuilding areas as required before applying new fabric.

What affects pricing?

Factors that influence cost include:

• Size and complexity
• Condition of the furniture
• Fabric choice and pattern matching
• Decorative details such as piping, buttons and trims
• Repairs required to the frame, springs or fillings

Structural repairs

Minor repairs can often be carried out during the upholstery process. More significant woodworking or specialist repairs may need to be undertaken by a trusted specialist.

Is upholstery worth it?

Upholstery is often worthwhile when furniture is well made, has sentimental value, fits a space perfectly, or simply cannot be replaced with something of similar quality.
